Tunnel Mystery
Many people ask about the tunnels rumored to exist beneath the Aldrich Farm House. Finally, once and for all, here is the truth: they
ARE there! Click the replica map of Aldrich Farm on the left for the approximate locations.
The need for the Aldrich Farm House tunnel system was secrecy. Henry Aldrich’s orchards were very successful and he quickly found himself as a leader in the booming apple growing business. But there was an aspect that Aldrich preferred to keep...underground. He had a family recipe for a "strong cider spirit.” The rest of east central Illinois called it “Cumberland Jack,” a potent brandy produced from apples.
As prominent members of the United Presbyterian Church, Aldrich was keen to keep this side of his pursuits quiet. A tunnel was dug from the apple storage bins under the Illinois Central railroad tracks to the north basement of the Aldrich Farm House. Another tunnel runs from the south basement to the old Neoga cemetery where the bottled Cumberland Jack was quietly put on wagons and shipped off into the night.
The tunnels are old and
dangerous. The current
owners do not allow tours.
Don't even ask.
